Flyfishing dry flies on moving water is the essence of flyfishing. It gives the individual a surreal feeling when you are on a stream or river without a person in sight and fish are rising to mayflies everywhere you look. The other 95% of the time you will need to throw large or small flies, sink nymphs to the bottom or strip streamers to get a strike. This variety of fishing conditions is also what makes flyfishing so appealing. Conditions change constantly and the fish adapt to the changing conditions. Try not to get locked into one type of technique or fly pattern, instead find the fish and observe how they are feeding and if possible what they are feeding on. Learn to read the water and where the fish like to hang out. Creeks and streams are excellent teachers for learning to read the water. When you have learned to dissect a stream apply the same knowledge to these rivers. During your visit try some of the many creeks and streams in the area. These waters are great for fishing attractor flies like Humpy’s or Royal Wulff’s and you can usually pick up fish anytime of the day on dry flies. Lot’s of fun! |
